Joyce Marian Hansen was born December 19, 1926 to Otto and Marian (Hawke) Hansen in Turton, SD. She grew up on a farm and attended the Prairie Center School #45. She later graduated from Brentford High School. On August 20, 1945, Joyce married her childhood sweetheart, Herman John “Johnny” Jansen. Johnny was called to duty in WWII and was stationed in Frankfort, Germany. Joyce stayed with family and friends until Johnny’s return from the war. Their first son, Jerald, was born February 16, 1946. Three more boys were born; Jene, Jack and Joel and a girl, Janelle.
Johnny was the superintendent of bridge construction so the family moved often. The places they lived included: Sioux Falls, New Underwood, Mitchell, Clear Lake, White River, Big Stone City, Huron, and Watertown, SD as well as Hull, IA. Joyce became a master packer. Years later, things were found that she had packed so many times. Some of these included Janelle’s teenage clothes which the granddaughters wore for a skit at John and Joyce’s 45th wedding anniversary celebration.
Joyce worked in the laundry at Pleasant Acres in Hull. She worked as the flag girl with her friend Mae Igo on several of Johnny’s job sites. Joyce devoted her life to being a housewife and mother to her five children, whom she loved dearly.
Joyce was an excellent seamstress. She loved sewing quilts, crocheting and embroidering. She seemed to have a green thumb and over the years often had a porch full of plants. She was an active member of the military organizations that John was affiliated with: American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ashton and later Redfield. John and Joyce were members of the Good Sam Camping Club for many years and traveled to many places.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, John, of Redfield; her children: daughter-in-law Myra (Jansen) Van Baale of Newton; Jene (Melissa) Jansen of Texas; Jack (Char) of Ashton; Joel (Gwen) Jansen of Chaska, MN; and Janelle Jansen of Sioux Falls. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Woodfork; Johnny’s one brother, Veryl and three sisters: Linda Thiesen; Vallerie (Ronnie) Abernathy; and Cheryl (Dale) Van Zee as well as 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and her cat, “Paws”.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jerald; two sisters: Bernadene (Lloyd) Lewis and Donna (Eugene) Zens; two brothers: Lyle (Mildred) Hansen and Lester (Joan) Hansen; three brothers-in-law: Roland Jansen, Kenny Thiesen and Oscar Woodfork; and sister-in-law, Shirley Hudson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for the United Methodist Church in Redfield.
